George C. Whitcomb At the age of 16, George C. Whitcomb enlisted to fight during WWI. Whitcomb faked his age to fight, but that didn’t stop him from fighting like an 18-year-old. He snuck into a German gun nest and was captured, but he outsmarted his captor and his captor accidentally blew up the gun nest. Whitcomb was injured during the process and honorably discharged. For his bravery, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross. After serving, Whitcomb returned to his home in Zortman, Montana, for a few years to work in the mine. He also attended University of Minnesota and State University of Montana. Whitcomb’s life came to an end in 1938 after an altercation with an officer in Helena. Whitcomb was just 37 years old.
